Music Monday:
“Graditude” by Beastie Boys
This past Saturday I had a show at the Austin Flea which is held at a swank bar/bowling alley/karaoke place called Highball. I went to the bar to order some food and while I was waiting a little kid sitting at the bar eating turned toward me. I noticed his shirt said “No Sleep Til Brooklyn” I told him “I like your shirt” then this happened:
him: It’s the Beastie Boys
me: I know, I like the Beastie Boys
him: Do you know what happened in China?
me: No, what happened in China?
him: MCA died.
His mom then interjects “no he didn’t” he says “yes he did,” then turns back to me to ask if I know Super Mario Galaxy Brothers. I about died. We then went on to talk about Super Mario Galaxy Brothers 1 & 2, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and the fact that “in 60 days (that’s 2 months!)” he will be 6 years old. He is one of the raddest kids I’ve ever met. I was impressed that he knew who the Beastie Boys are and that MCA had passed. I wonder if he’ll remember the day MCA died when he grows up. Here’s the first layer of a MCA mural done in Brooklyn. Go to this site to see the end result.
